  • Region: Greater Accra Region
  • Type of Assembly: Municipal Assembly
  • Capital: Dansoman
  • Year Established: 2016 (by L.I. 2309, carved out of Accra Metropolitan Assembly)

The Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 29 MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region. The Municipality was carved out of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly as part of the restructuring of Ghana’s local government system. It was established under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2309 and inaugurated on 15 March 2018, with Dansoman serving as the administrative capital.

Ablekuma West Municipality is located in the western part of the Greater Accra Region, within the metropolitan area of Accra. It shares boundaries with Ablekuma North Municipal Assembly to the north, Ablekuma Central Municipal Assembly and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to the east, Weija-Gbawe Municipal Assembly to the west, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. Its coastal location and proximity to central Accra give the Municipality strong residential, commercial and transportation connections with other parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In terms of land area, the Municipality covers approximately 15.01 square kilometres, according to current municipal documents. The 2021 Population and Housing Census recorded a population of 153,490, comprising 73,879 males and 79,611 females. Females therefore constituted approximately 51.9% of the population, compared with 48.1% males. The Municipality is highly urbanised and densely settled, reflecting its position within the Greater Accra metropolitan area.

The economy of Ablekuma West is predominantly urban and service-oriented, with commerce, retail trading, small-scale businesses, services, transportation and real estate playing important roles. The Municipality contains established residential and commercial communities, including Dansoman, and has a number of markets, schools, healthcare facilities and other businesses that serve both local residents and people from surrounding areas. The Municipality also has access to the Gulf of Guinea, providing opportunities for fishing and coastal recreational activities.

Dansoman is the Municipality’s principal commercial and residential centre. The area has developed into a major suburban community of Accra, with a mixture of residential neighbourhoods, commercial establishments, schools, religious institutions, markets and recreational facilities. Other communities within the Municipality contribute to its highly urban character and make Ablekuma West an important component of the western Accra urban corridor.

Administratively, the Ablekuma West Municipal Assembly is the highest political, administrative and planning authority within the Municipality. The Assembly is responsible for local governance, development planning, infrastructure provision, environmental management, revenue mobilisation and the delivery of essential public services within its jurisdiction. The Municipality operates through two Zonal Councils, namely the Dansoman North Zonal Council and Dansoman South Zonal Council.

The Assembly’s governance structure has historically comprised 10 elected Assembly Members and 6 Government Appointees, alongside the Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma West Constituency and the Municipal Chief Executive. The 2024 Composite Budget therefore described a General Assembly membership of 18, consisting of the elected and appointed members, the MP and the MCE.

Ablekuma West also has important coastal and recreational assets. The Municipality’s southern boundary along the Gulf of Guinea includes Dansoman Beach, while community recreational facilities and organised activities contribute to the social life of residents. The Assembly has identified the beachfront and other available land resources as opportunities for further development and local economic activity.

The Municipality faces the particular development pressures associated with a densely populated urban area, including traffic congestion, sanitation, drainage, flooding, waste management, housing and pressure on public infrastructure. At the same time, its proximity to Accra’s central business areas and its established residential and commercial base provide considerable opportunities for economic growth and improved municipal revenue generation.

With Dansoman as its administrative capital, Ablekuma West occupies an important position within the Greater Accra Region. Its compact geographical area, large urban population, coastal frontage and integration into the wider Accra metropolitan economy make it an important residential, commercial and service centre.
