Banda District Assembly

- Name of MMDA: Banda District Assembly
- Region: Bono Region
- Type of Assembly: District
- Year Established: 2012 (created by Legislative Instrument 2092, carved from Tain District)
The Banda District Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 12 MMDAs in the Bono Region. The District was carved out of the former Tain District and established in 2012 under the Local Government (Establishment of Districts and Municipalities) Instrument, 2012 (L.I. 2092). It was inaugurated on 28 June 2012, with Banda Ahenkro as its administrative capital.
Banda District is located in the north-western part of the Bono Region. It shares administrative boundaries with Bole District in the Savannah Region to the north, Tain District to the south, Kintampo South District in the Bono East Region to the east, and Côte d’Ivoire to the west. The District lies between approximately latitudes 7°00′N and 8°45′N and longitudes 2°52′W and 0°28′W.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Banda District had a population of 28,179, comprising 14,813 males and 13,366 females. The District is predominantly rural, with a population density of approximately 13.6 persons per square kilometre. The Ghana Statistical Service records the District’s land area as approximately 2,073 square kilometres.
The District has about 33 communities, with Banda Ahenkro serving as the principal administrative and commercial centre. Its relatively low population density reflects its extensive land area and predominantly rural settlement pattern.
Agriculture and fishing are important economic activities in Banda District. A significant proportion of the population depends on farming, while fishing also contributes to livelihoods, particularly in communities associated with the district’s water resources. The District’s location along Ghana’s western frontier also gives it potential for cross-border trade and other economic activities.
The Banda District Assembly is responsible for local governance and socio-economic development within the District. Its functions include development planning, revenue mobilisation, infrastructure provision, environmental management and the delivery of basic public services. The Assembly’s stated mission is to improve the quality of life of residents through the effective mobilisation and utilisation of human and material resources, with community participation in development.
