Berekum East Municipal Assembly

- Name of MMDA: Berekum East Municipal Assembly
- Region: Bono Region
- Type of Assembly: Municipal
- Administrative Capital: Berekum
- Year Established: Municipal status dates to the earlier Berekum Municipal Assembly structure; the current jurisdiction has subsequently been affected by the creation of Berekum West.
The Berekum East Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 12 MMDAs in the Bono Region. The Municipality was established by Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2299 of 2017, following the creation of the then Berekum West District from the former Berekum Municipal Assembly. The administrative capital of the Municipality is Berekum.
Berekum East Municipality is located in the Bono Region of Ghana. According to the Ghana Statistical Service, the Municipality shares boundaries with Tain District to the north, Berekum West District to the west, Dormaa East District to the south, and Sunyani West Municipality to the south-east. Berekum’s location within the western part of the Bono Region also places it relatively close to the Côte d’Ivoire border, contributing to commercial and economic activities in the area.
In terms of land area, the Municipality covers approximately 395.7 square kilometres. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Berekum East Municipality had a population of 106,252, comprising 50,163 males and 56,089 females. The Municipality is highly urbanised, with approximately 91,233 people living in urban areas and 15,019 living in rural areas. This makes Berekum East one of the most urbanised municipalities in the Bono Region.
The Municipality has a predominantly agricultural economy, with farming remaining an important source of employment and livelihoods. Agricultural activities include the cultivation of maize, rice, soybean, vegetables and cashew, alongside livestock production. The Municipality also has a growing commercial economy, particularly in Berekum, which serves as an important centre for trade, transportation, education, health and other services within the western part of the Bono Region.
Administratively, Berekum East Municipality is divided into four zonal councils, namely Berekum, Senase, Kutre and Mpatasie. The Assembly is responsible for local governance, development planning, infrastructure provision and the delivery of essential public services within its jurisdiction. The Assembly currently has 38 members, comprising elected representatives, government appointees, the Member of Parliament and the Municipal Chief Executive, although the precise composition reported on the Assembly’s current website differs from some earlier administrative records.
The Municipality is therefore an important administrative, commercial and agricultural centre within the Bono Region, with Berekum serving as its principal urban and administrative hub.
