The Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 12 MMDAs in the Bono Region. Dormaa Central is one of the older administrative areas in the region and was upgraded from a district to Municipal status under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2087. The administrative capital of the Municipality is Dormaa Ahenkro.
Dormaa Central Municipality is located in the western part of the Bono Region. It shares boundaries with Jaman South Municipal to the north, Dormaa East District to the east, Asunafo North Municipal and Asutifi North District to the south and south-east, and Dormaa West District to the west. The Municipality also shares an international boundary with Côte d’Ivoire, giving it an important position within Ghana’s western border area.
In terms of land area, the Municipality covers approximately 1,194.4 square kilometres. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Dormaa Central Municipality had a population of 112,702, comprising 55,108 males and 57,594 females. Of the total population, 44,933 people lived in urban areas, while 67,769 lived in rural areas. The Municipality therefore has a predominantly rural population despite Dormaa Ahenkro serving as a significant urban and commercial centre.
The economy of Dormaa Central is strongly linked to agriculture, with farming providing livelihoods for a substantial proportion of the population. The Municipality is known for the production of food and cash crops and has considerable agricultural potential. Dormaa Ahenkro also serves as an important commercial centre, supporting trading, transportation, education, health and other service activities across the Municipality.
Administratively, Dormaa Central Municipality is divided into eight zonal councils. The Municipal Assembly has 44 members, comprising 30 elected Assembly Members and 14 Government Appointees. The Member of Parliament whose constituency falls within the Municipality is a non-voting member of the Assembly. The Assembly is headed by the Municipal Chief Executive and is responsible for local governance, development planning, infrastructure provision and the coordination of essential public services within its jurisdiction.
The Municipality has also developed a range of economic, social and environmental assets. Among these is the Duasidan Monkeys’ Sanctuary, which has potential for further development as an eco-tourism destination. The Assembly has identified the upgrading of the sanctuary into a modern eco-tourism site as part of efforts to enhance local revenue generation and tourism.
Dormaa Central therefore serves as an important agricultural, commercial and administrative centre in the Bono Region, with its strategic location, extensive land area and proximity to Côte d’Ivoire giving it additional significance within Ghana’s western corridor.
