It was inaugurated on 29 February 2008, with Wamfie serving as the administrative capital.

Dormaa East District is located in the eastern part of the Bono Region. It shares boundaries with Dormaa Central Municipal to the west, Berekum East Municipal to the north, Sunyani West Municipal to the east, and Asunafo North Municipal and Asutifi North District to the south. The District’s capital, Wamfie, is located approximately 54 kilometres from Sunyani, the regional capital.

In terms of land area, the District covers approximately 541 square kilometres. Of the total population, 49,003 people lived in urban areas, while 18,896 lived in rural areas. Females therefore constituted approximately 50.9% of the District’s population, compared with 49.1% males.

The economy of Dormaa East is strongly linked to agriculture, with farming and related activities providing important sources of employment and livelihoods. The District is also recognised for its poultry production, with Dormaa East forming part of an important poultry-producing area in the Bono Region. Other economic activities include trading, small-scale businesses, livestock production and agro-processing.

Administratively, the Dormaa East District Assembly serves as the highest political, administrative and planning authority within the District. The Assembly is responsible for coordinating local development, preparing and implementing development plans and budgets, providing infrastructure and social services, and promoting effective local governance. The District Assembly’s own client charter describes the MP as an ex-officio member, while the Assembly Members are made up of two-thirds elected representatives and one-third presidential appointees.

Dormaa East has also placed emphasis on strengthening its sub-district structures and improving community participation in local governance. The Assembly continues to undertake development programmes in areas including roads, sanitation, health, education, agriculture, markets and local economic development, while engaging communities through town-hall meetings and other participatory mechanisms. Recent activities by the Assembly demonstrate its continued focus on community engagement, accountability and local development.
