Dormaa West District Assembly

- Name of MMDA: Dormaa West District Assembly
- Region: Bono Region
- Type of Assembly: District
- Year Established: 2012 (created by Legislative Instrument 2095, carved from Dormaa Municipal)
The Dormaa West District Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 12 MMDAs in the Bono Region. The District was carved out of the then Dormaa Central Municipal Assembly and established under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2094. It was inaugurated on 28 June 2012, with Nkrankwanta serving as the administrative capital.
Dormaa West District is located in the western part of the Bono Region. It shares boundaries with Dormaa Central Municipal to the north, Asunafo North Municipal to the east, Côte d’Ivoire to the west, and Bia East District in the Western North Region to the south-west. Its location along Ghana’s western frontier gives the District an important position for cross-border trade and socio-cultural exchange with Côte d’Ivoire.
In terms of land area, the 2021 Population and Housing Census records the District at approximately 369 square kilometres. According to the 2021 Census, Dormaa West District had a population of 47,913, comprising 25,522 males and 22,391 females. The District is predominantly rural, with 31,787 people living in rural areas and 16,126 living in urban areas. Females account for approximately 46.7% of the population, while males account for 53.3%.
The economy of Dormaa West is strongly agriculture-based, with cocoa farming being particularly important. Other economic activities include the cultivation of food crops, rice production, livestock farming, trading, timber-related activities and small-scale businesses. The District’s proximity to Côte d’Ivoire also provides opportunities for cross-border commerce.
Administratively, the Dormaa West District Assembly is the highest political, administrative and planning authority within the District. The District has one traditional authority and one parliamentary constituency, with Nkrankwanta serving as the administrative and commercial centre. The Assembly is responsible for local development planning, infrastructure provision, environmental management, social services and the coordination of government programmes within its jurisdiction.
The Assembly has 11 electoral areas, with its official website listing representatives from electoral areas including Asuopuri West, Asuopuri East, Krakrom, Yaakrom, Funtundaaso, Nyameama Brofoyedu, Mpokuaso, Kwadwokumikrom, Kwakuanya and Kwabenadwomokrom.
Dormaa West therefore occupies a strategically important position in the Bono Region, combining a largely rural, agriculture-based economy with the advantages of being located along Ghana’s western border. Nkrankwanta serves as the District’s principal administrative and commercial centre.
