The Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LeKMA) is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 29 MMDAs in the Greater Accra Region. The Municipality was carved out of the former Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA) as part of national efforts to decentralize administrative governance. It was established in November 2017 under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 2319 and officially inaugurated on 15 March 2018, with Teshie serving as its administrative capital.
Ledzokuku Municipality is located in the eastern coastal part of the Greater Accra Region. It shares boundaries with Krowor Municipal Assembly to the east, La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly to the west, Ayawaso West Municipal Assembly and Adentan Municipal Assembly to the north, and the Gulf of Guinea to the south. Its coastal positioning along the Atlantic Ocean and proximity to central Accra give the Municipality strong residential, commercial, and maritime connections within the capital’s urban corridor.
In terms of land area, the Municipality covers approximately 47.5 square kilometres, combining dense coastal settlements with expanding suburban commercial enclaves. The 2021 Population and Housing Census recorded a total population of 181,300, comprising 88,148 males and 93,152 females. Females therefore constituted approximately 51.4% of the population, compared with 48.6% males. The Municipality is highly urbanized and densely settled throughout its core territories.
The economy of Ledzokuku is predominantly urban, service-oriented, and maritime-based. Commercial trading, retail markets, hospitality, transport services, and health services play major roles in local livelihoods. In addition, traditional marine fishing and fish processing along the coast provide vital economic support for local communities. The Municipality also houses significant public and private health institutions, commercial bank branches, and light industrial enterprises.
Teshie is the Municipality’s principal commercial, administrative, and cultural center. Originally a traditional Ga fishing town, Teshie has grown into a major urban center with a mixture of dense traditional settlements, commercial high streets, and modern suburban neighborhoods. Prominent enclaves within the Municipality include Teshie Camp 2, Nungua barrier boundaries, GDM, and various estates such as Tsuibleoo, Teshie Nungua Estates, and Bush Road areas.
Administratively, the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly is the highest political, administrative, and planning authority within the Municipality. The Assembly is responsible for local governance, spatial planning, social infrastructure, public environmental health, drainage development, and revenue mobilization. The Municipality operates through Zonal Councils to bring local governance closer to the electorate.
The Assembly’s governance structure comprises elected Assembly Members representing various electoral areas, Government Appointees, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) as the administrative head, and the Member of Parliament for the Ledzokuku Constituency. The General Assembly serves as the primary policy-formulating and legislative organ at the municipal level.
Ledzokuku possesses significant cultural, health, and coastal tourism assets. Major institutions include the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly Hospital (LEKMA Hospital). The coastline along the Gulf of Guinea, beach spots, and traditional heritage—including the annual celebration of the Homowo Festival by the chiefs and people of Teshie—highlight the Municipality’s vibrant cultural and social identity.
The Municipality faces urban development challenges common to coastal enclaves, including coastal erosion, sanitation management, drainage deficits, periodic localized flooding, traffic congestion along the Accra–Prampram road corridor, and high pressure on public infrastructure. However, its vibrant commercial market base, health and security institutions, coastal tourism potential, and proximity to central Accra offer strong opportunities for revenue mobilization and economic development.
With Teshie as its administrative capital, the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly occupies an important position within the Greater Accra Region. Its coastal heritage, large urban population, prominent health and security institutions, and central place along the eastern transport corridor make it a key residential, commercial, and cultural hub in Ghana.
