The Pru East District Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 11 MMDAs in the Bono East Region. The District was created in 2008, following the carving out of the western portion of the then Pru District to establish the Pru West District. Pru East retained the eastern portion of the former district, with Yeji as its administrative capital.
Pru East District is located in the eastern part of the Bono East Region. It shares administrative boundaries with Sene West District to the east, Atebubu-Amantin Municipal to the south, Pru West District to the west, and Kintampo South District to the north. The District covers approximately 1,690 square kilometres according to the 2021 Population and Housing Census.
The District is strategically located along the Volta River and the Yeji–Kintampo corridor, giving it considerable potential for agriculture, fishing, transportation and commerce. Yeji, the District capital, is an important commercial centre and transportation point within the Bono East Region.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Pru East District had a population of 101,545, comprising 51,087 males and 50,458 females. The District had 21,186 households, with an average household size of 4.7 persons. Its population density was approximately 60.1 persons per square kilometre.
Agriculture remains an important economic activity in the District, with the area’s fertile lands and access to the Volta River supporting crop production and fishing. The District’s location also provides opportunities for livestock production, agro-processing and commercial activities.
The Pru East District Assembly is responsible for local governance and socio-economic development within the District, including development planning, infrastructure provision, environmental management and the delivery of basic public services. Pru East also constitutes the Pru East Constituency for parliamentary and presidential elections.
