Sene East District Assembly

- Name of MMDA: Sene East District Assembly
- Region: Bono East Region
- Type of Assembly: District
- Year Established: 2012 (created by Legislative Instrument 2084)
The Sene East District Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 11 MMDAs in the Bono East Region. The District was created out of the then Sene District, now known as Sene West District, under the Local Government (Establishment of Districts) Instrument, 2012 (L.I. 2091). It was inaugurated on 28 June 2012, with Kajaji as its administrative capital.
Sene East District is located in the north-eastern part of the Bono East Region. It shares administrative boundaries with East Gonja Municipal to the north, Krachi West District in the Oti Region to the east, Sene West District to the west, and Kwahu Afram Plains North District in the Eastern Region to the south. The District covers a vast land area of approximately 4,392.4 square kilometres, making it one of the largest districts in the Bono East Region.
The District’s location gives it considerable agricultural potential. It also serves as an important gateway between the Bono East Region and neighbouring parts of the Oti, Volta and Eastern Regions, with transportation across the Volta Lake providing an important link to surrounding communities.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Sene East District had a population of 72,081, comprising 38,433 males and 33,648 females. The District is predominantly rural, with 65,208 people (90.5%) living in rural areas and only 6,873 people (9.5%) living in urban areas. Its population density was approximately 17 persons per square kilometre.
Agriculture is a major economic activity in the District, supported by its extensive land area. The District also has a significant number of settlements and communities located around the Volta Lake, including island communities created by the formation of the lake. Fishing, farming and related commercial activities therefore form important components of the local economy.
Administratively, the District has two Area Councils: Kajaji Area Council and Bassa Area Council. The District Assembly is responsible for local governance, development planning, infrastructure provision and the delivery of basic public services throughout the District.
