  • Name of MMDA: Sunyani West Municipal Assembly
  • Region: Bono Region
  • Type of Assembly: Municipal
  • Year Established: 2008 (by Legislative Instrument 2093; elevated to Municipal status in 2018)

The Sunyani West Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 12 MMDAs in the Bono Region. The Municipality was carved out of the then Sunyani Municipal Assembly and established in November 2007 under Legislative Instrument (L.I.) 1881 as part of Ghana’s decentralisation programme. It was officially inaugurated on 29 February 2008, with Odumase serving as the administrative capital. The Municipality was subsequently elevated from district to municipal status.

Sunyani West Municipality is located in the western part of the Bono Region. It shares boundaries with Tain District to the north, Wenchi Municipal to the north-east, Sunyani Municipal to the south, Berekum East Municipal to the west, and Dormaa East District and Dormaa Central Municipal to the south-west. Its strategic location around the regional capital and along major road corridors gives the Municipality important commercial, residential and agricultural linkages with neighbouring districts.

In terms of land area, the 2021 Population and Housing Census records Sunyani West Municipality at approximately 1,031 square kilometres. According to the 2021 Census, the Municipality had a population of 136,022, comprising 67,251 males and 68,771 females. Of the total population, approximately 103,400 people lived in urban areas, while about 32,600 lived in rural areas. Sunyani West is therefore one of the more highly urbanised MMDAs in the Bono Region, with approximately 76% of its population living in urban areas.

The economy of Sunyani West is diverse, combining agriculture, commerce, services and emerging industrial activities. Agriculture remains an important economic activity, with residents engaged in the cultivation of crops such as cocoa, maize, cassava, plantain and cocoyam. The Municipality also has commercial and service activities concentrated around major settlements including Odumase, Fiapre, Nsoatre and Chiraa. Its proximity to Sunyani has further encouraged residential development, trading and other economic activities.

The Municipality also has significant natural and economic resources. Its soils support agricultural production, while clay deposits in the Kwatire-Adantia area have potential for brick and tile production. The area has also attracted interest in mineral exploration, including gold prospecting. These resources provide opportunities for agricultural value addition, manufacturing and local economic development.

Administratively, Sunyani West Municipality operates through seven sub-structures, comprising two Urban Councils, one Town Council and four Area Councils. The Urban Councils are Nsoatre and Chiraa, the Town Council is Fiapre, while the Area Councils are Awua-Dumase, Odomase No. 1, Dumasua and Koduakrom. These sub-structures are intended to bring local governance and development closer to communities.

Politically, the Municipality constitutes the Sunyani West Parliamentary Constituency and is divided into 38 electoral areas. Earlier Assembly records indicate a General Assembly comprising 38 elected Assembly Members and 17 Government Appointees, giving 55 Assembly Members, with the Member of Parliament serving as an ex-officio member.

The Sunyani West Municipal Assembly is the highest political, administrative and planning authority within the Municipality. It is responsible for coordinating local development, preparing and implementing development plans and budgets, mobilising local revenue, providing infrastructure and social services, and promoting effective local governance. The Assembly continues to support its sub-structures and community engagement as part of efforts to strengthen decentralisation.

With Odumase as its administrative capital and major urban centres such as Fiapre, Nsoatre and Chiraa, Sunyani West occupies an important position in the Bono Region. Its relatively large land area, sizeable and predominantly urban population, agricultural base and close relationship with Sunyani make it an important residential, agricultural, commercial and emerging economic centre within the region.
