Techiman Municipal Assembly

- Name of MMDA: Techiman Municipal Assembly
- Region: Bono East Region
- Type of Assembly: Municipal
- Year Established: 1988 (elevated to Municipal status in 2007 by LI 1871)
The Techiman Municipal Assembly is one of the 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in Ghana and forms part of the 11 MMDAs in the Bono East Region, with Techiman as its administrative capital. The Municipality was originally established as Techiman District in 1989 and was subsequently upgraded to Municipal status under Legislative Instrument (L.I. 2096).
The Municipality is located in the central part of the Bono East Region. It shares administrative boundaries with Techiman North District to the north, Nkoranza South Municipal to the east, Wenchi Municipal to the west, and Offinso North District in the Ashanti Region to the south. According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the Municipality covers approximately 639 square kilometres.
Techiman occupies a strategically important position within Ghana’s transportation and commercial network. The Municipality’s capital, Techiman, is a major commercial centre and an important trading hub linking southern Ghana with the middle and northern parts of the country. Its economy is supported by commerce, agriculture, transport services and a range of small and medium-scale enterprises.
According to the 2021 Population and Housing Census, Techiman Municipal had a population of 243,335, comprising 118,699 males and 124,636 females. Of the total population, 189,316 people (77.8%) lived in urban areas, while 54,019 people (22.2%) lived in rural areas. The Municipality therefore has a population density of approximately 380.6 persons per square kilometre, making it one of the more densely populated MMDAs in the Bono East Region.
Agriculture remains an important economic activity in the Municipality, particularly in the rural communities, while commerce and trading are particularly prominent in Techiman township. The city’s strategic location and extensive market activities have contributed to its emergence as one of the major commercial centres in central Ghana.
The Techiman Municipal Assembly is responsible for local governance and socio-economic development within the Municipality. Its responsibilities include development planning, infrastructure provision, revenue mobilisation, environmental management and the delivery of basic public services. The Assembly operates under Ghana’s local government framework, principally the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
