The District was carved out of the former Pru District and was established in 2017 under the Local Government (Establishment of New Districts and Regions) Instrument, 2017 (L.I. 2335). Agriculture is a major economic activity in the District and provides livelihoods for a substantial proportion of the population. Major crops cultivated include yam, cassava, maize and rice. Trading is also important, with Prang, Abease and Zabrama serving as major commercial centres.

The District’s location gives it strategic importance within the Bono East Region, particularly because of its connections to neighbouring districts and its position along important transportation routes. Prang, the District capital, serves as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding communities.

The Pru West District Assembly has three Area Councils: Prang Area Council, Abease Area Council and Zabrama Area Council. The General Assembly has 18 members, comprising 12 elected members and six government appointees.
